Scientists should be able to explain their work to anyone. Some may be very good story tellers, but others, like me, need the help visual aid to explain the scope, setup and results of their study.
During my career I noticed that even the best scientists struggled explaining their work to their peers, let alone their friends or family. I however enjoyed thinking about way to clarify the goal of a study, and why it was necessary, and how we think we’d get there. Some relatives (without scientific backgrounds) could re-tell my story years after I’d explained it to them! Hurray for the power of images.
Powerpoint was the most used software for oral presentations, and I noticed that many colleagues would use it for making images as well, however clunky they would look.. I was lucky that my research center owned Adobe licenses and I took the plunge and dove into Illustrator. There was no help, no support on-site, and this was back in the days where there was no ‘drop shadow’ button. I slowly but steadily grew accustomed with Illustrator and have made numerous illustrations. Since then (over the past 15 years) I have learned a lot, and my illustrations have been used for scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals, posters, oral presentations and blogs.
